Saito Strong Out of Red Sox Bullpen He didn’t pitch much, but when the Red Sox summoned Takashi Saito from the bullpen last week, he was extremely efficient and effective both times.

Saito earned a win and a hold in his only two appearances last week. He pitched an inning in each outing, allowing just one total hit, no walks and no runs, while striking out two.

Saito has not allowed a run in four straight appearances, dating back to Aug. 4, when he allowed a walk-off home run to Rays third baseman Evan Longoria in extra innings. His ERA now sits at an even 3.00, a very respectable number for the Sox’ short-relief righty.

Junichi Tazawa is the Amica Pitcher of the Week runner-up. He earned his first career win against the Tigers on Aug. 11, pitching five innings while allowing just one earned run (three total) on four hits and two walks to go along with six strikeouts.

Josh Beckett also pitched well in his only start of the week, going seven strong innings against the Tigers at Fenway. He allowed just two runs (both solo homers) on three hits and a walk while striking out six Detroit batters.
