Red Sox Sign Pitcher Fabio Castro, Claim Pitcher Ramon Ramirez Off Waivers

The Red Sox signed left-handed pitcher Fabio Castro to a non-guaranteed one-year contract and claimed right-handed pitcher Ramon Ramirez off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays, executive vice president/general manager Theo Epstein announced on Wednesday.

Castro, 24, went a combined 9-6 with a 4.01 ERA in 29 starts between Toronto’s Double-A New Hampshire and Triple-A Las Vegas affiliates last year. He posted a 2.47 ERA while going 0-1 in nine starts for the Gigantes del Cibao in the 2009 Dominican Winter League.

Ramirez, 27, posted a 3.65 ERA in 11 relief appearances over two stints for the Reds last season. He spent most of the year with Cincinnati’s Triple-A Louisville affiliate, going 6-7 with a 4.03 ERA in 31 games, including 20 starts.
 
The Red Sox 40-man roster is now at 37.
