Alan Embree's return to the Red Sox organization could be a brief stay.

According to WEEI.com, the left-hander will likely exercise an opt-out clause in his contract if he is not added to Boston's major league roster by April 15.

"[The Sox] only have me until the 15th, so that is the timetable," Embree told the Web site. "There are 29 other baseball teams out there that are probably looking for relief help. The goal is on the 15th to sit there and go, 'OK, I am going to Boston.' But if that is not the case, I have to think about the rest of the season as well."

Embree pitched a scoreless inning in his season debut with Triple-A Pawtucket on Thursday. The reliever recorded three outs on 10 pitches, and he reportedly hit 90-94 consistently with his fastball.

The Red Sox signed Embree to a minor league deal on March 20 to compete for a left-handed relief role in Boston's bullpen. Embree was left off the Sox' 25-man roster after left-hander Scott Schoeneweis earned the final spot in the 'pen.
