The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim lost two of three games to the Yankees this week, but that wasn't the worst thing Angels players had to witness.
According to the New York Daily News, a Manhattan man committed suicide from the 42nd floor of the team's hotel before its game against New York on Tuesday.
Pitchers Jered Weaver and Matt Palmer were reportedly crossing the street when they saw Brian Fiore, 39, make the plunge onto West 56th Street.
"Weaver actually saw him [land]," Palmer told the News. "I felt kind of sick to my stomach. … It's hard to see something like that and hard to take it."
According to police, Fiore asked to take a look at the hotel's pool, walked around the rail and leaped over. The pool's lifeguard attempted to grab Fiore but was unsuccessful.
Relief pitcher Brian Stokes did not see the incident, but can only imagine the horror of watching what took place.
"You can kind of picture it, but I'm glad I didn't get the whole visual of it — the body, or him falling," Stokes said. "But you realize how precious life is."
Manager Mike Scioscia thinks the tragedy could help his players gain a greater appreciation for the game.
"It's obviously traumatic when you witness something like that, but these guys understand the privilege of playing baseball," Scioscia said.
