Mike Cameron Could Be Facing Surgery If Strain Doesn't Heal The injury woes continue for Mike Cameron.

The Red Sox outfielder's troubles began last Thursday, when he woke up and could barely walk because of what he thought was an abdominal strain. Cameron was diagnosed with kidney stones, which he passed in time to get back into the lineup for Saturday and Sunday's games against Tampa Bay.

But the good news was short-lived for Cameron. He, along with Jacoby Ellsbury, was sent to the disabled list on Tuesday with what is now believed to be a sports hernia. According to Boston.com, he may require surgery if the strain doesn't heal with rest.

"It's tough news," general manager Theo Epstein told the Web site. "It's not what we were looking for."

For now, the plan is to take about a week off and see if he feels any better. If he doesn't, the 37-year-old Cameron is ready to explore other options. But for now, he's feeling good about his chances of avoiding the knife.

"I'm very optimistic because this is a football/hockey type of injury, and those guys are able to go back and play," Cameron told Boston.com. "It's just a matter of how fast your body heals up from it."

The timing of Cameron's injury is worsened by the fact that Ellsbury, a fellow outfielder, is also out of commission because of a bruised rib that he sustained during a collision with Adrian Beltre last week. He, however, could return as early as next week.
