New Red Sox Hero Darnell McDonald Took Long Road to Majors

New Red Sox Hero Darnell McDonald Took Long Road to Majors One night after playing the hero in Boston’s defeat of the Texas Rangers, Darnell McDonald was clearly basking in the moment.

“I’m just glad I got that unlimited plan from AT&T,” McDonald joked about all the text messages he received after tying the game up with a two-run home run and then engineering a walk-off wall-ball single for victory.

The 31-year-old has scrapped for years to make — and stay in — the majors. A key in sticking it out was learning to just “bring your lunch pail to work every day,” McDonald says.

“You can always get better in this game. … I’ve been fortunate that the Red Sox took notice and brought me over here.”

Click on the video below to hear more about how players like Nelson Cruz, Raul Ibanez and Ryan Ludwick inspired McDonald as well as one time back in 1999 when he considered walking away from the game.
