It appears as though Mike Cameron's abdominal pain was more than another kidney stone, as the 37-year-old outfielder will be placed on the disabled list, according to The Boston Globe.
The report says that Cameron, who was a late scratch on Monday for the second time in five games, has an abdominal tear that is "a type of sports hernia."
To replace the roster spot, Josh Reddick will join the major league club. As Peter Gammons noted on Monday morning, the 23-year-old has been staying in a hotel in Boston and commuting to Pawtucket.
Last week in Minnesota, Cameron felt abdominal pain, which turned out to be a kidney stone. He passed the stone on Friday and returned to the Red Sox' lineup on Saturday, but he made a critical error in the first inning that led to four unearned runs.
The Globe report, which cites a team source, speculates that the injury is related to the groin injury that temporarily sidelined Cameron in spring training.
Reddick has not gotten off to a great start with Triple-A Pawtucket, going 7-for-39 at the plate (.179 average) in nine games. He has, however, made the most of his hits, belting two doubles, a triple and a home run while driving in six runs. Last year in the majors, Reddick batted .169 with four doubles, two homers and four RBIs in 50 at-bats.
