Unless the Jets get their act together soon, Revis Island could be closed to visitors this season.
According to the New York Post, Darrelle Revis, New York’s All-Pro shutdown cornerback, is seeking a contract extension and may hold out if the papers aren’t signed by the Jets’ Monday Night opener.
The two-time Pro- Bowler is due to make just $1 million in base salary this coming season, the fourth year of a six-year deal. Revis told the Post that the organization “promised” him a new deal before the start of the regular season and does not expect the team to go back on its word.
"We'll figure it out when [the start of camp] comes,” Revis told the Post. "When you go back on your word, it's a problem.”
If Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum fails to live up to the promise, the Jets could be the ones with a problem on their hands. While former Pro- Bowler Antonio Cromartie and rookie Kyle Wilson provide adequate cover in the secondary if Revis held out, the real problem would come in the locker room.
After jettisoning veteran leaders Thomas Jones and Alan Faneca and bringing in high-maintenance players like Cromartie and wide receiver Santonio Holmes, the onus was on Rex Ryan to keep everyone happy. With Revis pegged to be one of the new leaders, if his situation gets to be a problem, it could upset the delicate balance of team chemistry and threaten the Jets’ season.
Tannenbaum, speaking to Colin Cowherd on ESPN radio, tried his best to follow team policy and not discuss contract negotiations, but couldn’t help expressing some confidence in the discussions.
"Our expectation is that Darrelle will retire a Jet many years from now," he told Cowherd.
Only time will tell.
