Longtime New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner was rushed to St. Joseph's hospital in Tampa, Fla., after suffering an apparent heart attack, according to WABC.[Update: Steinbrenner has died, according to several reports.]

Since being brought to the hospital by the Tampa Fire Rescue Squad, the 80 year-old-owner and philanthropist has been listed in serious condition.

The owner, who has won seven World Series titles since buying the team in 1973, has ceded much control of the franchise to his sons, Hank and Hal, in recent years, as his health has declined of late. He's been seen in public rarely over the past few years, though he made a memorable appearance at the 2008 All-Star Game at Yankee Stadium.
