The Red Sox may be giving Florida Marlins outfielder Cody Ross an extended look.
According to the Boston Herald, the Red Sox are one of the teams that has inquired about Ross.
The Marlins are falling fast in the NL East and could be sellers at the trade deadline.
The Red Sox have jumped in because of their need for outfield depth. Though Jeremy Hermida was activated from the disabled list on Thursday, everyday outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury is just starting baseball activities since fracturing several ribs. Mike Cameron also has been battling abdominal injuries but has managed to stay in the lineup for the most part.
Ross could be a possible backup plan for the Red Sox, who also are believed to have interest in Royals outfielder David DeJesus. But DeJesus left Thursday's game against the Yankees with a sprained right thumb, and the Royals are not sure how much time he will miss. They planned to send him to a hand specialist Friday, and Bob Dutton of the Kansas City Star warned that "he might be out a while," surely hurting his trade value.
Ross currently is hitting .275 with eight home runs and 47 RBIs with the Marlins. He is an outfielder who can hit for average with some power, and has hit at least 20 home runs in his last two seasons.
Adding him to the Red Sox’ roster would improve an outfield that has not been healthy or consistent this year.
