Dustin Pedroia will play with the Pawtucket Red Sox on Saturday and Sunday as part of his rehab assignment. If all goes well, the second baseman will likely be back in Boston for Tuesday’s game against the L.A. Angels.

After passing his physical on Wednesday, Pedroia was given the green light for actual playing time, starting with the Triple-A PawSox. He is scheduled to play second base on Saturday and move to designated hitter on Sunday.

Pedroia, who has been on the disabled list since June 26 after fouling a ball off his foot, was on a tear before the injury. The 2008 AL MVP was hitting .292 with 12 homers and 41 RBIs, but was also tied for first in the AL with 24 doubles and tied for fourth with 52 runs scored.
