Shaq realizes he is not a frontline superstar in the NBA anymore. He realizes that he likely won't be a starter for the Boston Celtics, and he realizes that there may be others called ahead of him off the bench — especially when center Kendrick Perkins returns from his knee injury. Something he hopes to continue throughout his career, however, is winning championships.
"I realize I'm much older now," Shaq told reporters during his news conference Tuesday. "I realize this team is a good team with or without me. Sometimes in order to win, you have to sacrifice, and I don't mind sacrificing, because at the end of the day it's all about winning."
Despite his veteran status, Shaq insists he's still got the desire to play the game hard. He knows he has just a few years left in his NBA career, but he wants to finish them on top.
"Do I have the same hunger? Yes," O'Neal announced. "If I didn't, I wouldn't be here."
