Test Your Knowledge About the History of the Patriots The Patriots have had a ticked-off Patriot named Pat and a Flying Elvis for logos since they joined the professional football world back in 1960.

While they have always been known as the Patriots, the team hasn't always been known as the New England Patriots.

On April 1, 1960, the Pats chose Boston University Field — the former home of the Boston Braves — as their first home. From there, they were was set to embark on a 10-year stint in the upstart AFL.

In 1970, after a decade of playing at four different sites, including Boston University Field, Harvard Stadium, Fenway Park and Boston College's Alumni Stadium, the Patriots — now proud members of the NFL — selected Foxborough, Mass., as the new home of the team.

After going 2-12 and finishing last in the AFC East in that first season after the merger, the Pats decided to rename the team for the 1971 season.
