Who Do You Root for When the Yankees Play the Rays? If the Red Sox are going to make a late sneak into the playoff back door, it’s going to take a pretty sizable collapse from either the Yankees or the Rays.

The two teams wrap up a three-game set Wednesday night in Tampa, and still have a four-game series in the Bronx left on the schedule starting Sept. 20.

The remaining five games will likely go a long way toward determining the AL East winner, but it may also give the Red Sox a slight glimmer of hope. The optimistic fan may look at those games and say that if one of those two teams takes the rest of the head-to-head games, the Sox may be able to make up ground in the playoff hunt.

More specifically, if the Rays were to take all of those games, it may give the Red Sox a chance to make up some ground on the Yankees, something even more important when you take into account the Sox actually still have six games left with the Bombers.

So Red Sox fans will likely be rooting harder than normal against the hated Yankees in the coming weeks. But by doing so, they’ll be rooting for one of the team’s newer rivals, the Rays, a team the Red Sox have had their struggles with this season and in the past (Remember the 2008 ALCS?). Plus, they’d be rooting for the Yankees, which in itself is enough to make most Red Sox fans sick to their stomachs.

Time is running out. The Red Sox need some help and it may have to come from either the Rays or the Yankees.

Who do you root for when Tampa squares off with New York? The Rays? The Yankees? Or do you simply root for neither?
