Terrell Owens is No Longer the Most Overrated Player in the NFL

In a Sports Illustrated poll of 269 players in the NFL, an alarming 14 percent voted Terrell Owens as the most overrated player in the league.

Yeah, maybe two years ago.

In the poll, Owens was voted ahead of Tony Romo (7 percent), Albert Haynesworth (5 percent), Mark Sanchez (5 percent), and Eli Manning (4 percent).

Owens ahead of Romo … really?

It seems like Owens' peers are letting his big mouth and off-the-field antics get in the way of their judgment, because TO is no longer the most overrated player in the league. There has been little to no talk about Owens' on-field contributions this season, where he actually deserves some chatter.

Sure, the Bengals are 2-3 this season on a two-game skid, but Owens' numbers are actually impressive. If he keeps it up, the wide receiver is on pace to set career-highs in receiving yards and receptions. He ranks 10th in the league in receiving yards (476) and that's with a bye during Week 6. If anything, Owens is underrated this season.

The fact that Owens' free agency option was turned over by the majority of the NFL — and that he wasn't signed until the night before training camp – proves that his overrated days are over.

Romo, on the other hand, is completely worthy of the overrated title. A solid crop of receivers and the strong Dallas running game have escalated Romo to the perception that he is one of the top quarterbacks in the league. But the mere fact that Romo struggles in the postseason and can't seem to lead the Cowboys to a win this year proves he's more overrated than TO.

It may take a few more games (and a few less antics) for Owens to shake his overrated title, but until then his opponents should be keeping their eyes on him in the endzone.
