Brian Urlacher Calls NFL Fines for Hard Hits ‘Outrageous’

Brian Urlacher has yet to receive a fine this season. But the Chicago Bears' linebacker still doesn't like the NFL's punishment policy for hits to the head.

"I think it's bull, the way they're doing it. The thing I don't like about it is, if they say it, you pay the fine. That's all there is to it," Urlacher explained on ESPN Radio on Wednesday. "And I don't know who makes the decision. I don't know if there's one guy, two guys, but I don't think it's fair. I think we should have a panel of guys who look at those hits and go over them."

The lashing out from Urlacher might have been sparked by the NFL fining Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison for the fourth time this season. Harrison was fined $25,000 on Tuesday for his hit on Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Steelers linebacker has been fined for a grand total of $125,000 so far this season.

Urlacher believes the NFL should consider different levels of fines for illegal hits.

"I think the money's outrageous," Urlacher said. "Why can't there be different levels of fines? A league minimum guy getting fined 50 grand? That’s a lot of money for him. Making 300 grand a year getting almost a fifth of his paycheck gone? I can go on all day about this because it frustrates me when I see these hits and these guys getting fined."

Urlacher ended his rant by stating that he doesn't want to think about how to hit a player while wondering what fines he might receive after the game.

That's the way somebody gets hurt. The NFL wants to make the game safer, but by handing out so many fines, they might be making football more dangerous.
