New Englanders, better yet, Red Sox fans across the country should embrace this while it lasts. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is admitting that the Bronx Bombers are currently inferior to the Sox.
On Tuesday morning, New York radio host Mike Francesa asked Cashman, barring any future moves for a starting pitcher by the Yankees, who had a better team, the Yankees or the Red Sox?
"Red Sox," Cashman said, according to ESPN.com.
It's no secret that the Yankees are still looking for another starting pitcher, something Cashman willingly admitted, citing New York's current lack of starting pitching as their primary setback when they match up against the Red Sox.
"Their starting pitching … they've got guys they can run one through six and I'm looking for a fourth," Cashman said of the Boston rotation.
Later during the interview, the possibility of Andy Pettitte coming back was mentioned. Cashman made it clear that the door is open for Pettitte, but Pettitte will most likely continue on the road to retirement.
"The biggest problem we have right now is I need a starting pitcher," Cashman said. "Everybody knows that. I'm going to work on trying to get that. It might come from someone who has decided right now they don’t want to play, it might come from a trade, it might come from within. Time will tell."
Time will tell come next fall when we see who has made the playoffs. But for now, Red Sox fans can relish in the fact that even their most-hated rival's own general manager admits his team needs some work to catch up to Boston.
