From done deal to no deal?

On Thursday, Maple Leafs GM and president Brian Burke shot down reports that Tomas Kaberle is close to being traded to the Bruins.

“It’s not true that the deal is done in Boston,” Burke said during an interview on NHL Live! “We continue to talk to multiple teams, and we’ll see where it goes.”

Kaberle expressed in an interview Wednesday that he was open to waiving his no-trade clause, and reports suggested a deal with Boston was inevitable, but Burke denies that he’s spoken to Kaberle directly.

“I would not even divulge the fact that he appears open to a discussion, except he’s already done so,” said Burke, who is believed to be working with Kaberle’s agent, Rick Curran.

Burke added that Kaberle has yet to submit a list of teams to which he would accept a trade.

“My guess is if we found something that was attractive and went back to the agent, Tomas might be receptive to that, but that’s far from clear or far from done,” Burke said. “We’re just going to keep knocking on doors. The fact that he has a no-trade doesn’t prohibit me from talking to other teams about potential trades, which we’ve done.”

The NHL trade deadline is Monday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m. ET. Time will tell if Kaberle is a Boston Bruin before then.
