Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane is redirecting the blame game, saying the Bruins got the wrong guy when they claimed he made a comment toward Boston bruiser Shawn Thornton.
In Tuesday's 3-0 win, Thornton took a skate to the face from Chicago's Fernando Pisani and had to be taken out of the game. While he was leaving the ice, Thornton turned angrily towards the Blackhawk bench – blood still gushing from his forehead – after being "chirped" by who he thought was Kane.
According to ESPN.com, Kane is playing the victim in this scenario, saying he didn't direct any comments at Thornton and that the Bruins were picking on the wrong guy.
"I was at the end of the bench and I was going out for the [next] faceoff, and next thing I know three guys are around me," he said. "I don't know if they thought I said it or what, but it's something that happens in hockey."
Kane said that the situation is being blown out of proportion and joked about how he intended to take on the three Bruins players at the same time.
"I just remember three guys swarming, and me wondering 'What did I do to deserve this?'" he said. "I was going to take [Zdeno] Chara down with my right hand and I was going to take [Brad] Marchand and [Mark] Recchi with my other hand. Yeah, probably all three at once."
Thornton is listed as day-to-day after receiving 40 stitches.
