There’s a level of selflessness that makes California defensive end Cam Jordan an easy guy to like.
Though he can play across the line in any type of front, Jordan is cut out to play defensive end in a 3-4 system like New England’s. He’s tremendous at eating up space, containing blocks and freeing up linebackers to make plays, and he’s also got the ability to knife through the line and get to the quarterback.
“I’m willing to buy into the program, and when you buy into a program, you’re definitely going to excel at what you do,” Jordan said. “I don’t know if it’s selfless, but you want to be a part of a defense. You get to feel like, ‘It’s my defense. It’s my team. It’s my family.’ So why not help everybody be the best that they can be?”
Jordan’s playing style, personality and team-first attitude make him a natural fit for the Patriots, who could consider him with the 17th pick in the draft. When asked directly if the Patriots have shown any interest in him, Jordan laughed and brushed the inquiry aside.
“I’ve definitely had some interest from some east coast cities,” Jordan said. “As far as the Patriots, I’m not going to answer that one.”
Jordan’s father, Steve, played tight end for the Vikings from 1982-94, so Cam Jordan grew up idolizing guys like John Randle and Chris Doleman. Minnesota, which holds the 12th pick in the draft, could be another landing spot.
Jordan, though, did recognize the natural fit in New England.
“I’m willing to play anywhere,” Jordan said. “If the Patriots drafted me, they’ve got a special offense, and that’s what you want as a defense. If your defense shows up and you’ve got a great offense, you can’t lose.”
