Having to play Glen Johnson unnaturally at left back for much of the season, it has been no secret that Liverpool has been looking to bring in a permanent first-team option at the position.

Newcastle’s Jose Enrique, who has enjoyed a standout season at St. James’ Park, has continually been linked to Anfield since January, and, now, Liverpool legend Phil Thompson has gone so far as to say that his move to Liverpool is “a done deal.”

“From what I’ve heard, yes the deal has been done and he will come to Liverpool,” he told TV2, according to Click Liverpool.

“It’ll be interesting because he’s done very well. He had a difficult first season coming into the Premiership a couple of years ago but he really understands the game now.

“He’s one of those full backs who is good going forward but he’s also a good defender and I think that is the main thing.”

The 25-year-old Spaniard’s price tag has been quoted as high as £15 million, though his value, per TransferMarkt.co.uk is just £4.84 million. The figure £8.5 million has also been floated around.

Thompson’s claim has not been echoed by other sources.

Liverpool, of course, also recently raided St. James’ Park for Andy Carroll on the final day of the January transfer window.
