BOSTON — Not all of the Bruins were celebrating after Wednesday night's victory over the Islanders.
Following the game, the club announced that rookie defenseman Steven Kampfer had been sent back down to their American Hockey League affiliate in Providence.
Kampfer, a first-year pro out of the University of Michigan, began the season in Providence and had 3-13-16 totals in 20 games there before being recalled to Boston in December. Kampfer made an immediate impact with the big club, adding an offensive dimension needed on the blue line with 4-4-8 totals in his first 20 games.
But he's had just 1-1-2 totals in his last 18 games and has been a healthy scratch for nine of the last 10 games. He will likely return to the big club and be on hand if needed in the playoffs, but he'll get a chance to stay sharp with action in Providence's final three games of the season this weekend.
The Bruins still have seven healthy defensemen with the big club, with veteran Shane Hnidy looking to see some game action having played just one game so far this season.
