When Shawn Thornton took a skate to the face a week ago, there was more drama involved than just the gash on his forehead that required more than 40 stitches.

As Thornton was skating off the ice, someone on the Blackhawks’ bench made comments prompting Thornton to attempt to break free from referee Don VanMassenhoven who was escorting the Bruins’ tough guy off the ice.

Thornton said after the incident that he couldn’t repeat what was said because of the language it involved, but that if he ever found out who said it, he would “deal with it” in his own way.

While no one knows who said it, and no one has come forward to admit that they said it, VanMassenhoven told ESPN.com that he knows what was said.

“I heard someone say, ‘Get off the ice, get off the [expletive] ice,'” Van Massenhoven told ESPN.com. “I don’t know who said it.”

Van Massenhoven didn’t call any penalties on Thornton or the anonymous Blackhawks’ player shouting expletives at the injured Thornton.
