After all, he's one of the greatest Bruins players ever, a part of the last B's team to bring the Stanley Cup back to Boston and arguably the most clutch player in Bruins history when the playoffs rolled around.
However, if you ask Espo, he no longer bleeds black and gold. He bleeds blue, black and silver.
"I could give one damn about Boston," Esposito told Fox 13 Sports. "I don't care about Boston. I got traded from Boston and ended up in New York [Ranger]. Tampa Bay is my home. The Lightning are like my child. I gave birth to it. It took everything I had physically and probably mentally left to get it. Boston I could care less. I hope we smoke them, to tell you the truth."
Of course, Esposito's current allegiances have a lot more to do with what he's done since he stepped off the ice, than what he accomplished on it. Esposito helped found the Lightning back in the early 90s, and he has been a part of the organization really ever since. He's now a radio commentator for the Lightning, as well.
His words likely won't go over well with Boston sports fans, who cherish loyalty and gravitate toward their sports heroes and eagerly wish to bring them in as one of their own.
Esposito is no different. He is a living legend in Boston, but for at least the duration of this series, that may certainly change.
