The 2012 NHL Winter Classic is heading to Philadelphia, although it may not be when and where you would expect.

CSNPhilly.com reports that the annual outdoor showcase will be played at Citizens Bank Ballpark on Jan. 2, when the Flyers take on the New York Rangers.

The game has been played on New Year’s Day in its brief history, but Jan. 2 will fall on a Monday in 2012, and the NHL reportedly did not want to have the game go up against the NFL, especially considering the Eagles play the Redskins at home on Sunday, Jan. 1.

Since Lincoln Financial Field will be the venue for the Eagles’ game (if there is an NFL season), the NHL had to find another location in Philly for the outdoor hockey game. Enter Citizens Bank Park, which will be the third baseball stadium to host the event.

The Flyers will be making their second appearance in the Winter Classic. They took on the Bruins in 2010 at Fenway Park.

The Rangers will be making their first appearance in the Winter Classic.
