Selected in the 13th round of the 1994 MLB amateur draft by the Red Sox, New England native Carl Pavano expected to one day be pitching at Fenway Park.
He’ll do exactly that on Sunday, except he’ll be wearing a Minnesota Twins jersey.
Pavano, of course, was famously traded along with Tony Armas Jr. to the Montreal Expos in 1997. In return, the Red Sox received some guy named Pedro Martinez, and the rest is history.
So, can any other move from the Dan Duquette era compare?
Another deal that looks laughably lopsided in retrospect was Duquette’s 1997 decision to deal reliever Heathcliff Slocumb to the Mariners for two prospects. Those two turned out to be Derek Lowe and Jason Varitek, quite the return.
Duquette, though, brought in a number of other players who would become integral pieces of the Red Sox’ championship teams. Johnny Damon, Manny Ramirez and Tim Wakefield all were, in fact, Duquette acquisitions.
