The veteran outfielder was designated for assignment on Thursday. The news was originally reported by Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe and Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com, and general manager Theo Epstein confirmed the news shortly after.
Cameron, 38, signed a two-year, $15.5 million deal with the Red Sox prior to the 2010 season. Injuries limited him to just 48 games last year, and this season in 33 games, he batted just .149 — exactly 100 points lower than his career average of .249.
The Red Sox now have 10 days to either trade or release Cameron. They also have the option of placing him on waivers, and if no team claims him, Cameron could accept a minor league assignment.
The Red Sox recalled Yamaico Navarro for Thursday's game.
