The NHL's new Winnipeg franchise has an arena and a coach. Now all they need is a name. According to several reports, though, it's going to be a familiar one.
After weeks of speculation, the team will reportedly be the Winnipeg Jets. Sportsnet.ca reported the news.
"I'm told that it will be the Jets," Nick Kypreos said on the network. "Obviously, they got to go with new colors and a new logo, but when it's all said and done, look for the Jets name to come back to Winnipeg."
TSN's Darren Dreger begrudgingly reported the news after it had leaked.
The franchise, formerly the Atlanta Thrashers, was set to announce its new team name just prior to the team's seventh overall pick in Friday night's NHL draft.
It is customary for teams to present their top draft pick with a jersey and hat, so fans will likely get a first glimpse at Winnipeg's new logo and jersey on Friday night as well.
