Despite a dominating four-game sweep by the Red Sox, the series was filled with ejections.
David Ortiz and Kevin Gregg went toe-to-toe on the Fenway Park infield on Friday, July 8, although neither one of the big combatants landed a punch.
Gregg pitched Ortiz inside, which caused the two to exchange words and, subsequently, the benches to clear. After order was restored, Ortiz lifted the next pitch to right field, which prompted Gregg to yell at the All-Star DH. Ortiz wasn't a fan of Gregg's antics and charged the mound, inciting a massive brawl. Four players, including Ortiz and Gregg, were ejected.
Sunday's series finale saw four more ejections. With warnings issued, rookie starter Kyle Weiland, making his major league debut, hit Vladimir Guerrero on the hand. While it didn't look intentional, home-plate umpire Marty Foster decided to throw out the 24-year-old righty. Terry Francona, who disagreed with the decision, was also thrown out.
Soon thereafter, Orioles reliever Michael Gonzalez and O's manager Buck Showalter were thrown out of the game after Gonzalez fired a pitch behind Ortiz.
The two teams are now set to square off in a three-game series in Baltimore. Ortiz and Gregg may begin serving their suspensions, but after a wild series at Fenway, we're left with more questions than answers.
One has to wonder if the bad blood between the two teams will linger.
