Since Washington, D.C., was first allowed to send its own representative to the Eastern Regional Tournament in 1998, Capitol City has been the representive all but twice. After the Northwest squad fell to Capitol City 14-3 in the first game of the state tournament, it looked like the streak would continue. Instead, Northwest defeated Capitol City in consecutive, pivotal games to clinch a spot in the next stage.
The team's lack of experience should be a detriment, but it already took out the state powerhouse, allowing only seven runs to Capitol City in the final two games. Not many teams have the ability to overcome their spot in the loser’s bracket and win their state. The state tournament alone seems to have prepared the squad for the challenges ahead.
