Jerricho Cotchery did not see himself as a No. 3 receiver. At age 29, he knew there was more in the tank and so he asked to be released by the New York Jets in order to shop himself around the league.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Cotchery has now found a new home with the Pittsburgh Steelers — the very team that ended Cotchery and the Jets' Super Bowl hopes last season in the AFC Championship game.
The former NC State standout's contract is a one-year deal.
Pittsburgh already has its first and second receiver options established, with the steady Hines Ward and the dynamic Mike Wallace. So oddly enough, according to ESPN.com's James Walker, Cotchery will most likely be competing for the third receiver spot — the very position he decided to opt out of with the Jets.
Cotchery had an injury-plagued season in 2010, resulting in the worst numbers of his career as a starter — he totaled 41 receptions for 433 yards and two touchdowns. However, prior to last season, Cotchery tallied at least 800 yards in four straight seasons, with his best year coming in 2007, when he caught 82 passes for 1,130 yards.
