Even though the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are in the middle of trying to compete for a playoff spot this season, they haven't lost sight of what the future holds.
According to an SI.com report, the Angels have reached an contract agreement with star pitcher Jered Weaver, securing the 28-year-old to a five-year extension worth $85 million.
Weaver is a strong candidate for this year's AL Cy Young Award, boasting a 14-6 record and a sparkling 2.10 ERA. In six seasons with the Angels, he has posted a solid 78-45 career record to go along with a 3.30 ERA.
The Angels are expected to make an official announcement about the deal on Tuesday, according to an ESPN.com report.
