Alex Avila’s Catcher’s Mask Sparks After Getting Hit by Foul Tip (Video)

Alex Avila's Catcher's Mask Sparks After Getting Hit by Foul Tip (Video) When Ted Williams visited with Mark McGwire at the 1999 All-Star game, the two talked about smelling burnt wood from their bats after they fouled pitches off. If Alex Avila were part of that conversation, he might now be able to tell the two what burnt metal smells like.

Avila’s mask sparked after getting lit up with a foul tip in a game Tuesday night against the Chicago White Sox.

Joaquin Benoit was throwing hard enough in the eighth inning that when A.J. Pierzynski fouled a fastball straight back into Avila’s mask, sparks were flying.
