FOXBORO, Mass. — Miles and miles from his former home stadium, Patriots running back Stevan Ridley can’t help but gloat about his LSU Tigers, who have taken over the No. 1 ranking in The Associated Press Top 25 Poll.

It’s been a surprising start for the Tigers, who have overcome suspensions and knocked off three ranked opponents away from home. After Saturday’s victory against West Virginia, LSU leapfrogged a victorious Oklahoma team for the top ranking in the poll. LSU gets its first chance to defend its No. 1 ranking Saturday against Kentucky.

“They’re balling, man,” Ridley said. “I’m happy for that team and coach [Les] Miles and all my Tigers. Those are like some brothers to me, and I’m glad to see that they’re doing well down there. Hopefully, they’ll go out there and get a championship.”

Ridley, a third-round draft pick in 2011, obviously knows the Tigers well. He won’t shy away from his bias, but he’s not surprised in the least over their surging 4-0 start to the season.

“Not at all,” he said. “I’d say that, first, that it’s a special group of guys down there in Baton Rouge. They’re young, but they’re very talented and they have an awesome coaching staff. They’re going to go out there and play hard every weekend.”
