It is unlikely to occur, but if the regular season ends with a three-way tie in the American League wild card standings, we now know how the tiebreaking scenario will play out.

If Boston, Tampa Bay and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have identical records after play is complete Wednesday, the Red Sox will host the Angels on Thursday at Fenway Park. Tampa Bay, by virtue of owning the best combined record against the other two, got the first choice in a selection process and will get to play the winner of that game on Friday.

However, that game would take place at the home of the winner of Thursday’s game, meaning the Rays would either travel to Fenway Park or Angels Stadium for the right to play in the American League Division Series. That ALDS would begin Saturday at either Detroit or Texas.

Entering the final three games, Boston owns a one-game lead over Tampa Bay and a three-game lead on Anaheim.
