Rangers pitching coach Mike Maddux has worked some wonders in Texas, and reports out of Boston indicate that the Red Sox front office may be interested to see what he can do in Boston in 2012 and beyond.
According to the Boston Herald, Maddux could be among the many candidates on general manager Ben Cherington‘s list. The Herald also lists Dave Martinez, Sandy Alomar Jr., Pete Mackanin, Dale Sveum, Torey Lovullo, Tim Wallach and Ryne Sandberg.
Based on the Sox’ pitching woes late last season, grabbing a manager with a pitching background seems to make sense. According to Scott Lauber‘s report, during Maddux’s three years on manager Ron Washington’s staff, the Rangers have posted a 4.03 team ERA, including 3.79 this season.
Maddux went 7-3 with a 3.97 ERA with the Red Sox in 1995 and 1996. In 15 MLB seasons, he went 39-37 with a 4.05 ERA.
