Taxi Drivers at Pan-Am Games in Guadalajara Feel Deceived, Not Getting the Amount of Business Expected

The XVI Pan-American Games have been tagged as the "Party of the Americas," but for taxi drivers in Guadalajara, it has been a huge disappointment. After nine days of competition, cabbies working at the different venues have complained about the lack of demand for their work, and feel they have been misled by organizers according to local daily El Informador.

"Nothing has changed for us during the games, we are still waiting for things to pick up, but things are slow here," said one of the veteran drivers.

Cab drivers claim that the hotels in and around the city are not at full capacity. Most of the tourist have pre-booked their transportation to and from the different venues and from their hotels to the airport as part of all-included tourist packages.

Most drivers claim they were misled by the Secretary of Transportation (Secretaria de Vialidad y Transporte), after the government office trained more than 3,800 taxi drivers and required them to get accreditations and special permits to better serve the tourists arriving for the Games.

"We all feel it was cruel and misleading. They do not allow us to get close to the venues to look for costumers, everything is barricaded and tourists do not know were to find us," claimed another cabbie.
