He was one of the few reliable arms in the bullpen, but his one-year deal expired at the end of the season.
Papelbon is a mere newbie when compared to Wakefield, who polished off his 17th season with the Red Sox. His 200th career victory was one of the last positive memories given the way the season ended. His versatility, even at age 45, made him a valuable asset.
It's hard to imagine Ortiz not in a Red Sox uniform. Since Big Papi arrived with his big swing and even bigger smile in 2003, he not only remade his career but helped rewrite franchise history. Saying goodbye to Varitek might be the hardest of all. The captain has been the team's solid foundation for 15 years, and the Red Sox are the only big league team he's ever known. He seamlessly assumed his role as a backup in 2011, but the arrival of Ryan Lavarnway may spell the end of Varitek's tenure in Boston.
