"The Revolution are expected to make an announcement Tuesday and have scheduled a press conference for Wednesday," according to the report.
Heaps, 35, was a mainstay in the Revolution defense from 2001-09. He retired as the club's all-time leader in appearances — 294 in all competitions — and has served as the analyst on the team's broadcasts for the past two seasons.
The Duke University graduate was a mainstay at right back, before moving to left side of defense at the end of his career. He was picked second overall in 1999 by the now-defunct Miami Fusion and traded to New England two years later. He was a key figure during the Revs' glory years, playing a leading role on teams that reached the MLS Cup final four times.
He replaces longtime head coach Steve Nicol, who was let go by the club after 10 seasons in charge.
Heaps' emotional attachment to his hometown club was evident during his retirement press conference in December 2009.
"I loved playing Revolution soccer," he said. "It meant the world to me. It was an honor to play it for the Kraft family and the Revolution organization. I feel like the luckiest athlete here to have been able to play for my home team. I've been able to bleed for the Revolution."
