Gio Gonzalez is one of the best young left-handed pitchers in baseball. It only makes sense that there would be plenty of teams across both leagues who would love to have him in their rotation.
It sounds like the Red Sox are one of those teams.
ESPN.com's Gordon Edes reports that the Red Sox are "extremely high" on Gonzalez, and he is a "name that has been widely discussed internally by the team."
However, Gonzalez, who is still under contract with the Oakland Athletics, likely won't come cheap. In fact, the Miami Herald recently reported that in initial talks with the Miami Marlins, the A's were asking for either Mike Stanton or Logan Morrison in exchange for Gonzalez. ESPN's Buster Olney later reported that Morrison wasn't part of talks and that Stanton was untouchable (understandably so), but it's clear that Gonzalez won't come cheap.
In his first two full seasons as a starter for the A's, the 26-year-old has been a workhorse. He's thrown more than 200 innings in each of his last two seasons, posting a 31-21 record to go along with a 3.17 ERA. He does struggle with command, however, walking 92 and 91 batters in the last two years respectively.
