Despite reports that David Ortiz will accept the Red Sox' offer of salary arbitration and return to the club in 2012, general manager Ben Cherington has said that he hasn't yet received an official confirmation from Ortiz.
Cherington continued to stress his desire to have the slugger back in a Red Sox uniform, and admitted that he'll likely speak with Ortiz's agent this evening, although he's unsure what the nature of the talks will be.
Ortiz, of course, has a midnight deadline to accept arbitration.
Cherington also discussed the flexibility that Daniel Bard and Alfredo Aceves give the Red Sox, as both are willing to pitch in whatever role the team needs them to. He said that he expects some good, healthy pitching competition come spring training.
