Eduardo Vargas Signs With Napoli, Snubs Move to English Premier LeagueEduardo Vargas is headed for Serie A club SSC Napoli. ESPN reports the Chilean starlet was a target of both Liverpool and Chelsea, but chose the Italian club as his entry point into European soccer.

“Yes I will be joining Napoli, a large team in Italy,” Vargas told Chilean outlet Radio Cooperativa. “I’m sure I’ll do very well there. I know [Edinson] Cavani and [EzequielLavezzi.”

“I am very happy that everything was tied up quickly, and for me to play in Italy is a dream come true.”

Vargas will cost Napoli Â£11.5 million ($17.9 million) when he leaves Universidad de Chile on Jan. 1. He will join fellow South American forwards Cavani (Uruguay) and Lavezzi (Argentina) at the Italian club.

The fast and technical striker is a finalist for the South American Player of the Year award, which goes to the top player who plies his trade in South America. His star performances for Universidad led it to the Copa Sudamerica title. He was given player-of-the-tournament honors after he scored 11 goals in 12 games, including three in the two-leg final.

Chelsea and Liverpool scouted the 22-year-old in recent weeks.

Chelsea will get a good look at the one that got away when it meets Napoli in the round of 16 in the UEFA Champions League in February and March.
