The Red Sox haven't yet added the starting pitching help they seek. But they've checked in on some hurlers, including the Arizona Diamondbacks' Joe Saunders.
The Sox are one of a few teams interested in the left-hander, according to the Arizona Republic's Nick Piecoro.
Saunders is coming off a season in which he went 12-13 with a 3.69 ERA. He is 69-52 with a 4.16 ERA in 161 starts in his seven-year career. The 30-year-old spent five-plus seasons with the Angels before being shipped to Arizona in the deal that landed the Angels Dan Haren.
Saunders was named an All-Star in 2008 and finished that season with a career-high 17 wins. He went 17-7 with a 3.41 ERA in 31 starts that year.
Saunders, who's tossed over 200 innings each of the last three seasons, is arbitration eligible. He made $5.5 million last season.
According to WEEI.com's Alex Speier, Saunders is considered by some in the industry to be a non-tender candidate, which means he could be available at a relatively low cost in terms of prospects or that he could eventually become a free agent if he is non-tendered.
