Craig Bellamy Awaits Dream Carling Cup Final Against Hometown Club Cardiff CityCraig Bellamy‘s wildest dreams came true this week. His winning goal dumped his former team, Manchester City, out of the Carling Cup. It set up a dream final pitting the club he supported as a boy (LFC) against his hometown club Cardiff City, according to LiverpoolFC.tv.

“The omens were looking good … after I saw Cardiff go through,” Bellamy said. “I was delighted for them and this couldn’t be a better final for me. Cardiff means so much to me. And to score the winning goal against my old side to set up this final makes it a perfect night.”

The Welsh winger was a pivotal figure in Wednesday’s game, earning “man-of-the-match” accolades for his efforts. His 74th minute goal gave the Reds a 3-2 aggregate victory in the two-game Carling Cup semifinal. It earned them a place in LFC’s first major final since 2007.

Liverpool will take on the Championship’s (English soccer’s second division) third place team at the new Wembley Stadium on Feb. 26. Bellamy couldn’t help but note the irony of playing for his boyhood team (that he supported) against the team from the city of his birth.

“I have never played at Wembley either, so it will mean so much for me to go there and try to win a trophy,” Bellamy said. “But now we’re playing a Welsh side at Wembley. It’s funny how football turns out.”
