Throughout his career, former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling was known as a gamer on the baseball diamond. Some fans might be surprised to learn he was another type of gamer, too.

Schilling's video game production company, 38 Studios released its first product, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, with an early Tuesday morning release at selected Gamestops across the country.

"For you gamers out there, this is kind of God of War meets Skyrim in a really cool way," Schilling said in an interview with NESN.com's Jeff Howe while in Indianapolis for Super Bowl XLVI.

The former pitcher was apparently pretty pleased with the release, as he was at a GameStop in Bellingham, Mass., for the game's release at midnight on Monday night.

"Holy crap! Just left GameStop in Bellingham, amazing turnout, over 250 people! Thanks to 38 Studios and our amazing fans!!" read a tweet from Schilling on early Tuesday morning.

The role-playing game is available for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC. It has received excellent reviews, including a 7.5 out of 10 from GameSpot and a 9.0 from IGN. The game is hailed for its storyline, crisp graphics and gameplay, especially in combat.
