"He prepares every game with 100 percent commitment and we appreciate it as players," Cech said after Chelsea's 3-1 loss to Napoli in the UEFA Champions League.
"But if you have players on the pitch making mistakes he can't help it. The problem is on the pitch where we don't transfer our good work on the training ground."
Chelsea has recently gone into full-blown crisis mode. It faces the very real prospect of elimination from this season's Champions League, as well as a failure to qualify for next season's elite competition.
The Blues are in fifth place in the Premier League, having won just two of their last 10 games. They could also crash out of the FA Cup in the fifth round if they fail to beat Birmingham City on March 6.
It has been widely reported that Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich will fire Villas-Boas if Chelsea fails to achieve a top-four finish in the league and endures a trophy-less season.
But the manager is adamant that he retains the support of Abramovich. It was only last summer that the club spent a record £13.3 million ($21 million) to pry him away from Portuguese club FC Porto.
Cech, the longtime Chelsea goalkeeper thinks the problem is that the players are great in practice, but find game situations more difficult.
"We always say we keep working hard on the training ground but unfortunately we don't seem to transport that that on the pitch."
Answering the million dollar question: "Why is this the case?", will go a long way toward explaing why Chelsea's season seems to be slipping away.
