Before Tuesday’s 9-2 loss against the Blue Jays, the Patriots coach visited players in the clubhouse and offered a motivational message –– a "pump up" speech as pitcher Daniel Bard called it –– to the club.
"It was nice," Valentine said. "He's a good baseball fan. He talked to us guys. I think he used a little reference of when things don't go right, you can turn the page. A new year is a new year. Make it the best you can make it. He follows our team. It's not just like he dropped out from Mars and wanted to say hey, how you doing. He kind of gets it."
The tandem's close relationship dates back to their time in New York, when Valentine managed the Mets and Belichick assisted with the Jets. At the time, both coaches stopped at each other's facilities.
"He spent many a day behind that cage," the Red Sox skipper revealed.
Valentine expects the Patriots headman will make another round in the Red Sox clubhouse before the season concludes.
