Whether it's dropping down suicide squeezes, diving in the outfield to rob hitters or swiping bases, the veteran outfielder has done it all as he attempts to make the Red Sox roster as a utility man.
As Bobby Valentine prepares to announce his final decision on Sunday, Repko hopes the Red Sox skipper has taken notice of his versatility.
"The type of player that I am –– and the type of player I've been in the past being off the bench –– you have to be able to do the little things in a game," Repko said. "If it's sac bunting, hit and running or stealing a base when you need it or maybe defense. When I came to spring training, I tried to make sure I could hopefully display those things."
His strides have been aided by a healthy winter. During the past two years, Repko has undergone thumb surgery and battled a serious concussion, injuries that slowly sapped away his playing time.
For the first time in a while, the 31-year-old outfielder entered the offseason without an ailment, allowing him the opportunity to hone his craft. As a result, he's produced four RBIs and has stolen seven bases this spring.
"I was able to go into the offseason and really work hard and gain some strength and flexibility that brought me into spring training, where I feel actually in better physical shape than I did in the past," Repko said.
Offensively, he's contributed to the Red Sox as well, dropping down five sac bunts –– an asset that fits in line with Valentine's detail-oriented approach. His baserunning skills are even more alluring.
"His speed is very useable," Valentine said. "He has the capability of hit and running and protecting runners and advancing them with the ability to bunt for a hit. And his hitting seems to be getting a little better. His hitting has been –– he's been searching for his stroke all spring."
He may have found it, but his future remains in Valentine's hands. The manager is expected to choose between Repko, Pedro Ciriaco and Nate Spears for the elusive last spot on the 25-man roster.
