Red Sox Rejoice As Fenway Park Added to National Register of Historic Places

Fenway Park has been a sanctuary for Boston sports fans for nearly a century, containing more history between its big green walls than almost any arena, building or park throughout the country. And on Wednesday, Fenway was recognized for that unique and timeless history.

Entering its 100th season as the official home of the Red Sox, Fenway Park has finally been added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The Red Sox received notification of the acceptance from the National Park Service on Wednesday, a process that took more than a few months to complete.

The honor fulfills a commitment made to Red Sox fans over a decade ago, as ownership is clearly making a concerted effort to protect and preserve the tremendous history of Fenway Park.

The Red Sox plan to celebrate the accomplishment during the park's honorary 100th anniversary celebration throughout the 2012 season.

Fans can expect an ongoing celebration throughout the season to commemorate Fenway's history and importance to the Red Sox franchise. And Wednesday news is just the beginning of that process.
