Larry Bird may be nearing the end of his time as an NBA executive, and it would be his decision to walk away.
The New York Post reports that Bird is set to retire from his position as the Indiana Pacers' president of basketball operations at the end of this season.
Bird has served as the president of basketball ops for the Pacers since the 2003 season. He shared decision-making power with then-CEO Donnie Walsh before taking over on his own six seasons ago. The Pacers have struggled some in the middle of Bird's tenure, but he's helped turn things around for a Pacers team that is currently 27-18 and occupying the fifth spot in the Eastern Conference.
Bird also spent three seasons as head coach in Indiana, after he took over prior to the 1997-98 season, occupying the Pacers bench through the 1999-2000 season.
